Coconut Palm, Cocos nucifera
Cocoanut palms have huge fronds, and can provide instant shade.  Beware, you run the risk of losing the palm to a cold spell if you plant them in Sarasota/Bradenton.  We lost a lot of them in 2010.  Also be aware of dropping cocoanuts when deciding on a planting site.

If you do choose to plant coconut palms in the Sarasota region, it is a good idea if you live close to the water.  Large water bodies act as a buffer to temperature fluctuations.
