Hong Kong Orchid, Bauhinia variegata

Orchid trees display their purple flowers for about three months beginning in late fall.  Despite its beauty, the orchid tree is listed as a category one invasive species in Florida due to its aggressive nature in displacing and hybridizing with native species.
Orchid trees are considered a subtropical tree that will grow to about thirty feet.  In colder areas, frequent frosts reduce the tree shrub size.
