Bird of Paradise Nicolai, Strelitzia nicolai

Nicolai is the big bird.  Give plenty of room as they can get up to thirty feet high in optimal conditions.  Full sun and part shade are fine, but try to buffer from high winds.  The winds tend to tear the leaves giving a messy look.  Also, keep in mind flowers don't appear for about five years after planting.

Due to their height, planting around a  building or two story house is appropriate for nicolai.

Nicolai is a clumping plant, so it forms an effective screening.  This homeowner used nicolai and areca palms next to their royal palms for a privacy barrier.
