St. Augustine, Stenotaphrum secundatum
With few exceptions, sod is limited to two types in this area, St. Augustine and bahia grass.  St. Augustine requires irrigation or it may die.  Floratam is the most popular variety of St. Augustine but others are available that are lower growing and shade tolerant.

Bahia grass (not pictured here) is a pasture grass that is drought tolerant so no irrigation is needed.  It has thin, tough blades that are difficult to cut.
