Southern Magnolia, Magnolia grandiflora

Southern magnolias are prized for their large, white, fragrant flowers which appear during spring and summer.  The American native has many cultivars but the one pictured, D.D. Blanchard, is the most widely planted variety in this region.  They feature a distinct brown undercoating on the leaves.
The pyramidal structure and dense, evergreen foliage make the southern magnolia a fantastic screening when planted in line.
The next most popular variety for this region is the mini version called Little Gem.  The tree is strategically placed along the walkway for close-up viewing of the foliage and flowers.
